Pointe-du-Hoc

The steep cliffs of the Pointe-du-Hoc were the site of a courageous
attack by the 2nd Ranger Battallion. While they succeeded in taking the
post, the victory came with heavy losses, and in the end the guns turned
out to be decoys. Ouch.
The landscape at the Pointe-du-Hoc was very different from the other beaches; because the Pointe is on solid ground at the top of a cliff (rather than in the sandy dunes of the beaches), the scars of battle still remain, most impressively in the undulating hills and craters of the bomb-scarred terrain. |
