Late on Saturday afternoon we went to the American Cemetary, which overlooks Omaha Beach. This is where most of the American casualties from the D-Day invasion are buried.

Visiting this place was probably the most emotional and moving part of the entire trip. Words and simple photographs cannot express the enormity of the place, the emotional power of being surrounded by unending, perfectly straight rows of simple white crosses, the impact of walking through an aisle, reading the names and realizing that with every step you walk by yet another 19-year-old boy who sacrificed his young life for freedom and liberty. It really brings home the enormity of war, the senselessness of mass slaughter, and the brutal reality of the battlefields of WWII.
